HADR Institute Global Disaster Snapshot 22-28 May 2023 (GDS 008)

Map of the world with three countries numbered on it (Sudan, Italy, Canada)

In this edition of the HADRI Global Disaster Snapshot, covering the week of the 22 to 28 May 2023, we address three key events:

1. Sudan: Tentative ceasefire in Sudan allows NGOs access (25 May 23)

The status of the ceasefire called on 24 May 23 remains uncertain, with flare-ups increasing and both sides accusing each other of violating the agreement. While several ceasefires have previously been called and subsequently violated since the conflict broke out on 15 April 23, the current ceasefire falls under the auspices of undisclosed “monitoring mechanisms” led by the US and Saudi Arabia.

2. Italy: Recovery after flooding in Northern Italy (26 May 23)

Regions within Northern Italy have commenced recovery efforts post the catastrophic flooding that took place on 18 May 2023. Severe rainfalls across Northern Italy caused numerous rivers to burst, causing flash flooding, particularly in the Emilia-Romagna region. 15 people reportedly died and thousands of residents were forced to flee their homes.

3. Canada: Cooler weather brings relief to Canadian wildfires (27 May 23)

A cool weather window and rains have brought a small reprieve for the fight against wildfires in the western provinces of Canada. Although some residents have been able to return home, authorities are warning that this year’s fire season is nowhere near over. With reports of 7,243 people remaining displaced and 65 wildfires still burning, Canadian emergency responders are relying on internal reinforcements to help extinguish fires that have burned over 10,310 km2 of land.
