Earthquake struck Tonga’s offshore

The earthquakes occurred 73-95km off-shore, north of the village of Hihifo (~301 people as of 2021), on the island of Niuatoputapu in the Kingdom of Tonga.

The US Tsunami Warning System has found no evidence to justify a tsunami warning. Hihifo is the main civil and administrative centre on the island, servicing the other two villages of Falehu (~218 as of 2021) and Vaipoa (~172 as of 2021).

The 7.6 magnitude earthquake was followed by a 5.6 magnitude tremor.
