The same weather system that has hit Rwanda and Uganda on 2 May 23 (See HADRI’s GDS 005) has continued west causing catastrophic damage in D.R.C’s east. Heavy rainfall has caused flash flooding and landslides, which reportedly killed 400 people and wounded an additional 150. Significant damage to housing, infrastructure, fields and livestock has also been reported.

The most significant damage has been reported in villages neighbouring Lake Kivu, particularly those in the Kalehe territory. Bushushu and Nyamukubi (approximately 30km North of Kalehe) are two of the most heavily impacted villages.

The main road between Nyambukubi and Kalehe has been significantly damaged and is currently unusable. The two closest hospitals are located in Kalehe and Bukavu, currently being accessed via boat. Support is currently being provided by emergency teams from Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF).
